Supported Housing

Supported Housing is a mental health housing assistance program and is the least restrictive option in the continuum of residential services at Catholic Charities of Cortland. This program provides on-going rent subsidies and one time housing assistance to individuals facing a housing crisis or need.

Qualifications:

In order to qualify for an ongoing rent subsidy in this program an individual must be diagnosed by a qualified professional as seriously and persistently mentally ill (SPMI) and meet income eligibility guidelines. One time, short term housing assistance is available to individuals that have a primary mental health diagnosis but do not meet the other criteria for SPMI.

Payment:

The Supported Housing Program is funded through the NYS Office of Mental Health. There are no associated costs for participants of the program.

Participation:

Program participants choose where they want to live and receive staff guidance in choosing appropriate, affordable housing. If necessary, staff will help the participant interact with landlords over residential rights and responsibilities or provide advocacy services. If the applicant is eligible for financial support, rent stipends are paid directly to their landlord and furnishings are supplied if necessary.

Length of Stay:

The time that someone participates in the Supported Housing Program varies depending on circumstances, income, and ability to access alternative housing subsidies.

Program Expectations:

Individuals participating in this program must report changes in household income and household composition, pay their portion of rent on time, uphold any agreements they have with their landlords, and apply for other housing benefits for which they may be eligible, such as Section 8.
