Independent Housing Option

The Independent Housing Options (IHO) is a supported housing alternative for people who have some difficulty living independently and a history of housing related crisis. Staff support is available during workday hours at this site for the residents who otherwise live independently. Residents share living space and have private bedrooms in this setting.

Qualifications:

Consumers with a mental health diagnosis who experience difficulties maintaining housing have priority for this site. They must demonstrate independent living skills including ability to manage their medications, cook, do laundry and housekeeping chores, and maintain their personal hygiene in order to live at the IHO. Utilities, trash service, and television service are included in the monthly rent.

Payment:

Residents at the IHO are responsible for paying their own rent, which may be subsidized by the Cortland Housing Authority, the Office of Mental Health Supported Housing program, or other public assistance benefit.

Participation:

There is no program or treatment associated with this residential option. Some individuals require minimal support while others utilize a variety of other community support, such as the Case Management Program at Catholic Charities. Residents are responsible for their own meals, personal care, appointments and activities.

Typical Length of Stay:

Similar to other programs, length of stay varies depending on the needs of the individual. This site provides permanent housing for those who wish to reside here on a long-term basis.

Program Expectations:

Residents are required to abide by a general lease agreement that prohibits smoking, and unruly or illegal behavior. They are expected to respect other resident's property and clean up after themselves. Other expectations include timely rent payment, attention to personal health, routine maintenance and common respect for fellow tenants.
